Course Description

If you're an enthusiast wanting to learn about how to apply design ideas, or you're simply a homeowner with a passion for design, ready to embark on a renovation project, or simply adding flavor to your living space, we can help. Whether your goal is for a residential, retail, or commercial space, this course is designed specifically for those starting out in the design world. It will help you revise, reshape, reimagine, and recreate any space. The class is a five-part course that could be taken all together or a la carte: 1) Define Your Style; 2) Purpose and Function; 3) Lights and Color; 4) Blending the Elements with Function and Style; 5) Styling, Staging, and Storage.

Course Outline

Day 1 / Identify your Style
Before you can begin to plan, it is essential to decide on a style. The instructor designed a style-quiz for students to help narrow their preferences. It will also enable you to begin creating a space.

This segment of the session will cover virtual vision boards and design apps.

Resource materials will be available, and if they have not already created a Pinterest page, the instructor will assist; you can share our boards and resources with the class.

Day 2 / Purpose and Function
If you already have a firm idea of your style, the next step is to ask what the space’s purpose is and how it needs to function.

What is the purpose of the space, and who uses it? Does it need to serve multiple functions? Will adults, kids, and pets use it? These factors will drive many considerations, such as open or closed storage needs, task versus ambient lighting, seating, floor coverings, window treatments, and sound! The easier your space is to interact with, the easier it will be to keep it consistent with your vision.

Look at what is on your vision board. Is it consistent with the needs of the space? Take time to edit boards.

Day 3 / Light and Color
We will discuss what dramatic differences can be achieved simply by changing the lighting or paint in a room. Discover how color and light work together, whether you prefer neutrals or vibrant shades. Balance bold pallets creating a harmonious flow using analogous or complimentary colors in a room or room. Give neutrals added interest by introducing texture within color and mixed lighting styles.

Look for examples to add to boards. Try using an app that has lighting and wall color features, such as Homestyler or Room Planner.

Day 4 / Blending the Elements with Function and Style
Once you have selected a style, identified the purpose, and had your color pallet, the instructor will help you find balance within the space. You’ll also learn how and when to mix metals and wood, choose appropriately proportioned furnishings, mixing textures and scale pieces. You’ll explore using vertical and horizontal elements, geometric and organic shapes, forms, hardware, window treatments, trim, and door color for your vision to come together. Choose with confidence!
