Course Description

If you're an enthusiast wanting to learn about how to apply design ideas, or you're simply a homeowner with a passion for design, ready to embark on a renovation project, or simply adding flavor to your living space, we can help. Whether your goal is for a residential, retail, or commercial space, this course is designed specifically for those starting out in the design world. It will help you revise, reshape, reimagine, and recreate any space. The class is a five-part course that could be taken all together or a la carte: 1) Define Your Style; 2) Purpose and Function; 3) Lights, Color, Action!; 4) Blending the Elements with Function and Style; 5) Styling, Staging, and Storage.

Course Outline

1) Define Your Style.
Not sure where to begin your journey to creating the space you want? Do you fall victim to making purchases of pieces you love only to get them home and find they just do not work? Learn ways to narrow your focus without compromising what makes your space a unique and personal reflection of your own style. Discover how to mix more than one style if eclecticism is your thing. Consider your surroundings, choose pieces that enhance and flow with your space, and learn to let go when less is more.

2) Purpose and Function
After you have defined your style what is the purpose of the space and who uses it? Does it need to serve multiple functions? Will it be used by adults, kids, pets... these things will drive many considerations such as open and closed storage needs, task vs ambient lighting, seating, floor coverings, window treatments, and even sound! The easier your space is to interact with the easier it will be to have it remain looking consistent with your vision.

3) Lights, Color, Action!
See what a dramatic difference can be achieved simply by changing the lighting or paint in a room. Whether you prefer neutrals or vibrant shades discover how color and light work together. Balance bold pallets creating a harmonious flow whether using analogous or complementary colors in a room. Give neutrals added interest by introducing texture within colors and mixed lighting styles.

4) Blending the Elements with Function and Style
Now that we have a style direction, know the purpose of the room, and we have our color pallet we can look at balance within the space. Choosing the right scale and textures for furnishings, artwork, Vertical and horizontal elements, organic and geometric forms, window treatments, doors and trim color. Now we are ready to have fun and choose with confidence! Whether it’s a few fresh updates, one room, or an entire house of furnishings you’re ready for change!

5) Styling, Staging, and Storage
I have all my new stuff...now what! See how to add visual interest in bookshelves, how to style your bar-cart, coffee, and side tables. What should be seen and what should be tucked away and where. Don’t put extra blankets for the sofa in a closet if you want them to get put away- have a hinged ottoman or blanket basket. See how to realistically live with and maintain your fresh look without the clutter creeping in.
