Muddy Waters gave him the name Chicago Beau, and he has recorded and performed with some of the most respected names in music, including Memphis Slim, Archie Shepp, Pinetop Perkins, Fontella Bass, the Art Ensemble of Chicago, the African choir Amakhono We Sinto, and Frank Zappa. Testimonials

What first struck me in the class was how informal it was. I was expecting more regimented assignments, discussions, readings, etc. Being a logical thinker, this did bother me a little bit at first. It was unusual how Lincoln would spend lots of time in the class going on tangents. I wasn't sure what to make of it at first, but as time went on in the class, I began to understand its effectiveness. What I began to appreciate was how open the ideas and format could be. I learned that we could really write about anything, and Lincoln's free-flowing, creative, and unusual style of teaching engendered a creative sense within myself. I didn't feel like I really had to filter what I wrote for the class, since basically anything was acceptable. One thing that sticks out in my mind was when Lincoln said, "If it's inside, write it down." It made me realize that what I feel inside is worth putting down on paper. K. W.
