Course Description

Build a foundation in core accounting concepts while exploring whether accounting is the right career for you. You’ll learn how financial transactions impact a business and gain introductory skills that prepare you for college-level QuickBooks and Payroll courses at Harper. You'll leave equipped with essential knowledge to understand and analyze financial reports and a basic understanding of how transactions and economic events impact a business's financial condition and operating results.

Topics include: Basic accounting concepts and terminology, the accounting equation, financial statements, accrual and cash basis, and the accounting cycle. The course assumes a corporate form of organization.

Learner Outcomes

  • Analyze business transactions using accounting concepts and principles. 
  • Analyze business transactions within the accounting equation and the rules of debit and credit. 
  • Compose journal entries from (a variety of) transactions.
  • Complete an entire accounting cycle.
  • Identify and prepare financial statements.
