Course Description

In this course, students will develop the attitudes, skills, and knowledge needed to be active supporters of, and advocates for, the gay, lesbian, bisexual, transgender, and queer plus (LGBTQ+) communities. This course focuses on gender and sexual diverse persons across the lifespan. The course is meant for the general public and intended on developing a process for the development of being an ally. Topics include the “coming out” process, controversial issues (e.g., religion).  Discussions and research surrounding controversial issues affecting the gender and sexual minority community serve as the focal point. 

Course Outline

  • Week one: Class introduction, Discussion of LGBT Ally, Discuss activity, interview, and seminar. Discussion of LGBT Knowledge. Coming out process for LGBT – LGB, youth LGB, Older LGB. LGBT terminology, Queer theory. 
  • Week two: Discussion of Ji articles.  LGBT Gay Marriage. Religion and LGBT issues.
  • Week three: HIV/AIDS counseling.  Biological basis for LGBTQ.
  • Week four: first interview and discussion. Political Advocacy and LGBT Equal Rights.
  • Week five: Bisexuality. Parents and Families of LGBT Children (Guest speakers – PFLAG).
  • Week six: Activity due and discussion. Guest Speakers – Straight spouse network; Straight Spouses and LGBT
  • Week seven: Week eight: Guest speakers – Transgender and Parents of Transgender. Transgender – transitioning
  • Week eight: seminar presentations. Class Wrap up. 

Learner Outcomes

Upon successful completion of the course, students should be able to: know what it means to be an ally to LGBTQ+ communities, and what it means to identify as an ally to LGBTQ+ communities.
