Course Description
MOVING PICTURES first emerged in the late 1800s and has maintained its fascination in visual entertainment to the present day. Simple, on-screen narratives, like The Great Train Robbery (1903), have evolved into complex and captivating dramas like Casablanca (1942), The Godfather (1972), and Dances with Wolves (1990), as well as into epic masterpieces like Star Wars (1977), Schindler’s List (1993), Titanic (1997), and Avengers: Endgame (2019).
The Language of Filmmaking begins with a love of cinema and a comprehensive understanding of its origins and transformations. This class offers an immersive journey into the inner workings of the film industry and what it means to be a filmmaker. Students will gain insight via interactive lessons in cinema history, critique, screenwriting, and film production to experience how various roles, techniques, and terminology are utilized and discussed by those in the industry.

Terrie Hayes, is a Chicago-based Screenwriter, Story Developer, and Filmmaker. She draws inspiration from her muse, Norman Rockwell, to infuse her family and romantic dramas with humor, heart, and wholesomeness. Her stories often feature exceptional talents, nostalgic time travel, relational mending and reconnection, and supernatural whimsy. With a strong passion for Story Development, Terrie’s teaching focuses on Story Theory, Concept, Crafting, and Intention. She firmly believes that all writers can enhance their storytelling skills by exploring personal motivations and by mastering the essential, act-by-act building blocks utilized by professionals. Terrie holds an MFA in Screenwriting and Television, an MA in Creative Writing and Screenwriting, and a BA in Cinema Art and Science from Columbia College Chicago (magna cum laude).
