This course provides students with strategies on how to safely work and operate powered industrial trucks, forklifts, scissor or aerial lifts, and pallet jacks. Safety principles and proper work practices to prevent workplace incidents/accidents and injuries are discussed, and will apply to all types of workplace settings, with a special emphasis on warehouse and distribution facilities. The course is based on established training and procedural guidance from OSHA standards, Info Sheets, Fact Sheets, and other OSHA, CDC, and NIOSH materials.

Course Outline

  • Forklifts, scissor/aerial lifts, and pallet jack safety.
  • Aisles and loading dock safety.
  • Enclosed and hazardous areas (carbon monoxide)
  • Pedestrian traffic in an area with powered industrial trucks.
  • Forklift safety according to OSHA guidelines and standards for powered industrial trucks. 
  • Worker safety for drivers and pedestrians in a warehouse facility.
  • Safe clearance for aisles and loading docks to ensure unobstructed traffic flow or obstructed view for drivers.
  • Hazard awareness associated with combustion byproducts, i.e., carbon monoxide.

Learner Outcomes

  • Understand and be familiar with OSHA’s standard on potential hazards related to working near or operating powered industrial trucks, forklifts, scissor/aerial lifts, and pallet jacks.
  • How safety procedures apply in a work environment to protect workers from injury and safety incidents.
  • Understand what employer responsibilities are for having a training program in place.
  • Understand aisles and loading dock safety related to the operation of powered industrial trucks and pedestrian traffic.
  • Understand and be familiar with the different types of workplace emergencies and how to respond according to an Emergency Action Plan.

Notes

Harper College is a proud recipient of the OSHA Susan Harwood Training Grant which provides FREE training and education. Government employees are not eligible to participate due to grant regulations (Local/City/Municipality, County, State or Federal) unless, occupational health and safety training is part of the employee's job role.
