Course Description

Many people who are curious about writing are deterred by the rigid and traditional standards of poetry. This course gets rid of that barrier by providing a “no guard rails” environment where students can explore self-expression through the fluid platform that poetry is. By focusing on poetry in today’s world, we’ll deconstruct its typically associated power of being a lofty expression. The course provides an accessible entry point for those seeking personal and academic enrichment without the pressure of formality.

The course is perfect for folks with a love of learning and creativity who may feel uncertain about traditional poetry “rules.” This includes curious hobbyists and non-traditional students exploring writing for the first time or as part of their broader artistic interests.

Course Outline

  • Use poetry as a tool for physical and emotional self-exploration, helping students to trust their instincts and stay curious about themselves and the world they inhabit.
  • Develop original definitions of poetry based on immediate experience rather than mental rationalization.
  • Produce original creative works using a variety of multi-genre prompts across prose, drawing, and crafts.
  • Engage in critical analysis with close reading of poems, specifically examining line breaks, voice/persona, and typography.

Learner Outcomes

Participants will create a tangible, finished piece—a handcrafted poem—that can be included in an individual chapbook. This anthology-style collection will serve as both a keepsake and an incentive for participants from the northwest suburban community.

Ages 16+

Because the course will be delivered online, participants will need reliable internet or Wi-Fi access. Digital platforms will be used to share poem typography for group analysis, and digital versions of handouts will be provided. Basic creative materials are recommended for multi-genre activities such as “Color Me Blue” and “If Objects Could Talk.” These may include paper for writing and drawing, along with basic craft or art supplies. Participants are encouraged to use materials readily available in their surroundings, provided they support authentic self-expression.
