Throughout the course, students will engage in a comprehensive exploration of the short film medium, covering essential topics such as:
- Understanding Short Film Structure: Learn the key elements that define a compelling short film, including the three-act structure, character development, and thematic depth.
- Crafting Engaging Characters: Discover techniques for creating memorable and relatable characters that resonate with audiences, even in a limited timeframe.

Notes
Brian Mellen is a filmmaker, editor, and videographer. He has taught at both DePaul University and Flashpoint College and now Harper College. He has worked for clients in Chicago, Milwaukee, Nashville, and Dallas as well as other places nationally. He films and edits commercials, live events, short form documentaries, and various online content. He recently finished supervising the Post-Production on "Mass Teleportation Authority" a short film he also edited. He also directed and edited the short film "Spark and Fade" which played at festivals across the country where it won the FirstGlance Film Festival Philadelphia's Online Short Film Contest. As a result of winning the online contest, Spark and Fade made its California Premiere at the Regal LA LIVE Stadium in downtown LA as part of FirstGlance Film Festival's LA circuit.
