Course Description

Life is intriguing even in its most minor measures. A short film delivers a brief but meaningful story of a character with a problem that needs to be solved (via a Big Want), but someone or something gets in the way. That’s storytelling in a nutshell. Who your Main Character is, WHAT problem needs solving, and HOW the Main Opposer makes the short journey difficult is up to you! Throughout this eight-week class, you will be guided through the basics of Story Development, Character Development, Story Structure, Theme, Conflict, Setting, Dialogue, Scene-Writing, and Screenwriting—all the tools you need to write an impressive first draft in 10 pages or less. Everyone will have the option of doing a Live Reading at “Hollywood at Harper -- 5-Minute Film Fest” in May and entering scripts into external film festivals for students.
