Course Description

In recent years, workplace violence has unfortunately been on the rise, which has initiated an increased need for violence prevention programs to help protect workers, and others in public and private settings. Whether it is a business, factory, school, mall, house of worship, or any type of public event, the need for general safety measures, and or guidance on how to respond to violent events is clear. According to OSHA, employers are required to provide their employees with a place of employment that is “free from recognized hazards that are causing or are likely to cause death or serious physical harm." This course is designed to provide employees with strategies on how to effectively respond to an active shooter incident. The course is designed to provide participants with strategic responses to this type of incident. An active shooter preparedness/response plan will be shared and will apply to all types of workplace settings -business offices, factories, hospitality/service industries, and buildings.

Course Outline

  • Define the different types and levels of workplace violence, and active shooter incidents.
  • Worker Rights and OSHA regulation and expectation of employers.
  • Characteristics of possible warning signs of a potentially violent employee.
  •  Initial response to an active shooting incident.
  • Strategies of run, hide, fight response.
  • Response by law enforcement and what to do.
  • Suggested strategies for workplace violence prevention programs.
  • Collaboration with local law enforcement agencies.
  • Training and support resources for employees related to workplace violence prevention, and post-incident Employee Assistance Programming.
 

 

 

Learner Outcomes

  • Understand the different types and levels of workplace violence, and active shooter incidents.
  • Identify possible warning signs of a potentially violent employee. 
  • Know how to react based on their individual circumstance; run, hide, or fight.
  • Understand how and why law enforcement will respond and manage an active shooting incident.
  • Know how to react when law enforcement arrives.
  • Understand the need for an Emergency Action Plan (EAP) for the workplace.
  • Find training and support resources for employees related to workplace violence.

Notes

Harper College is a proud recipient of the OSHA Susan Harwood Training Grant which provides FREE training and education for workers and employers in workplace safety and health hazards.

Government employees are not eligible to participate due to grant regulations (Local/City/Municipality, County, State or Federal). The intended audience includes:

  • Supervisors and Managers
  • Employees and Workers
  • Unemployed Workers who intend to re-enter the workforce
  • New Businesses
  • Limited English Proficiency Workers
  • Low Literacy Workers
  • Young Workers
  • Temporary Workers
  • Minority and other hard-to-reach workers
  • Workers in high-hazard industries with high fatality rates
  • Government Employees who are responsible for occupational safety and health duties at their agencies
