Course Description


If you want to write children's books, this course is for you. This course teaches you the fundamentals of writing picture books for children aged 0-12. You'll learn how to tell stories, structure your work, develop characters, write for your target audience, write dialogue, understand popular children's themes, self-publish versus traditional publishing, work with illustrators and publishers, and market and distribute your work.  Students should have basic computer skills.


 This course is offered as a self-paced, online live, or in-person course. See individual sections for details.

The instructor, Virginia Bailey, is an independent film/video writer, producer, director, and published author of children's audiobooks, hardcover, softcover, and eBooks. She also teaches Screenwriting II, Advanced Screenwriting Workshop, Pre- and Post-Production for Film, Television & Internet, and Writing Children's Books.

 

Learner Outcomes


By the end of the course, you'll have the tools and resources necessary to begin navigating the world of children's book publishing and grow as a writer for children.

You may register for this online Self-Paced course until April 17, 2026; you must finish by May 15.
Students are responsible for completing the modules independently. Limited instructor support is available, with up to one hour allotted for email correspondence and virtual meetings as needed.
The instructor has created videos for the student to access at any time of the day or night. Students may replay videos as often as they like. Additionally, instructor support will be available through email and up to one hour per student via individual Webex sessions.
