Course Description

Use your own lived experiences and obsessive interests to create fresh, standout pieces of creative writing. Whether you’re a poet, a playwright, an essayist, a short-story writer or aspiring novelist, or you’re not sure yet – this class is for you. Through generative exercises, readings, discussions and instructor feedback designed to break through blocks and deepen creative thought and technique, Writing From Experience encourages writers to play and take risks with their writing, as well as consider how their own life experiences, observations, and areas of interest can make for better stories, stronger characters, and more engaging writing.

Whether you’re working on a writing project, have an idea, or just want to experiment with creative writing, Writing From Experience provides guidance and exercises suitable to writers at all levels.

Throughout Writing From Experience, students will be given insight into how best to edit, revise, and get their work “out there” using both traditional and non-traditional forms of publishing.

Instructor Allison “A.T.” Gruber, has over twenty years of experience teaching creative writing in the classroom. She is the author of two books and four plays, and has been anthologized and published widely in the genres of creative nonfiction, poetry, and hybrid prose.

Testimonials

I participated in class #LLA0049-004 Writing from Experience with Allison Gruber, which just finished this week.  I thoroughly enjoyed the class and gained many useful insights, perspectives, and resources to help me in my journey to write a personal memoir.  Allison is insightful and encouraging and created a safe, comfortable space for all participants to share their works and ideas.  I would like to see a follow-up course to this one since creative writing is a process that takes time as thoughts and ideas evolve.  New writers need direction and encouragement as they bring their stories to life, and Allison provides both with insights into her own experiences, a broad network of resources, constructive feedback, and contagious passion for all forms of writing.  I would gladly invest the time and money to participate in a follow-up class with Allison as the instructor.
