Course Description

Discover the art of capturing moments, telling stories through images, and expressing your creativity with your camera. We will explore the use of different lenses, learn about good composition, and see how dramatic lighting can make your photos more exciting. You will also be introduced to the concepts of photographing people along with objects. Classroom instruction and hands-on practice through assignments will help you learn to get the most from your own photographic eye. Finally, we will touch on how to print your digital photos. You must have a 35mm DSLR or Mirrorless camera with manual and automatic capabilities. Visit ce.harpercollege.edu for more details.

This eight-week course is designed to teach you the basics of Digital SLR or Mirrorless camera. The intention is for you to fully know what the Aperture, Shutter, ISO do and how to use these as your creative tools. Knowing how to use these functions is a guaranteed result of the course. The class is structured to teach both the craft of photography as well as the artistic. Sessions are structured to cover the functions of the camera while also exploring the creative possibilities through artistic assignments and the study of fine art photography.

The difference between this high-end camera and a point and shoot camera (or even your iPhone camera) is that all these buttons and adjustments are there to free your creativity, to “make” photographs.

The course is taught at a high-level while being completely accessible to both the novice and the experienced. It is a fun, innovative and completely creative class. You’ll come out of it with a sound understanding of the photographic process and some excellent photographs.

Testimonials

I really enjoyed working with Harold, he was open about many techniques, and getting info about being in the profession was very interesting and eye-opening. He made us all feel comfortable and excited about us learning and moving forward. B. L.

I learned a lot in the photography class. He taught by example and we had a lot of hands-on experience in class. He was able to talk to the various levels of experience each student had in class and to the variety of camera models we each had. S. L.

Harold is a great instructor, who makes his classes very interesting and full of creative energy! V. W.
