Course Description

Join us for a breathtaking journey through the universe at the Harper College Observatory on August 18th, from 8:30 PM to 10:00 PM. Experience the wonders of space with our Newtonian telescopes for a truly life-enhancing adventure.

Highlights of the Evening:

  • Saturn's Rise: Saturn will be visible starting at approximately 9:00 PM, serving as the highlight of the night.

  • Other Celestial Wonders:

    • The Ring Nebula, a glimpse into what the Sun will become in 5.5 billion years.

    • A globular cluster, a dense ball of stars over 10 billion years old.

    • One or two bright stars to marvel at.

A Brief Historical Context: The tradition of stargazing dates back to 150 BC, when one of the first observatories was built on the Greek Island of Rhodes. Science has made incredible progress since then, culminating in modern-day observatories like ours.

Important Information:

  • Weather Contingency: In case of overcast skies, alternative dates are August 19th or August 21st. Registered participants will receive email notifications.

  • Telescope Options:

    • 14-inch telescope: Requires climbing a ladder; comfortable shoes are recommended.

    • 8-inch telescope: A slightly smaller option but still provides an excellent view.
