Course Description

William Dean Howells' novel "The Leatherwood God," is a fictional account based on actual events following an 1828 religious revival in rural Ohio. At that revival meeting, an itinerant preacher claimed to be the Messiah. This startling event spurred a long-lasting feud between this alleged Messiah’s adherents and disparagers. The lecturer, Daniel Reid, is descended from those on both sides of this family feud. This engaging lecture intertwines family history, religious debate, and communal ruptures while exploring a fascinating episode from the early years of American nationhood.
