Brian "Fox" Ellis as Lincoln's law partner William Herndon

Course Description

What is a Chautauqua? It began as an education and social movement that was popular in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. They brought entertainment and culture into a program that sought to spread knowledge and foster discussion through the whole community, with speakers, teachers, musicians, showmen, preachers, and specialists of the day. You’ll hear presentations from historians who perform in character as we focus on important historical issues in American history.

Notes

The LLI Chautauqua 2024 will start in the Amphitheatre of the Wojcik Conference Center (Building W) on Friday, August 29 starting at 9:00 am. We'll start off the day with talks by Lincoln's law partner and biographer William Herndon and Mary Lincoln. Then you'll move to the dining room next door for lunch, questions and discussion in the true spirit of a chautauqua.

History through performance! The LLI Chautauqua 2024 will take place in the Amphitheatre of the Wojcik Conference Center (Building W). You’ll hear from Mary Lincoln (Abe’s wife) and William Herndon (his law partner and biographer). Their talks, delivered in period dress, will be both lively and informative. Their presentations will be followed by lunch in the Wojcik Dining Room at which you’ll be able to ask your questions and discuss the ideas shared by these important historical figures. We often define Mary and William through their relationship with the President, but each is interesting on their own and so their voices remain strong. Join us on Thursday, August 29 and find out why.
