From Skill-Building to Career Confidence: Student Success Story

When Vanessa A. enrolled in Harper College’s Excel Specialist (Microsoft 365) Badge program, she was already working full time as an Administrative Assistant. Like many professionals, she recognized that Microsoft Excel had become essential in daily workplace operations and she wanted to feel more confident using it.

“I wanted to get better at Excel because it is a transferable skill that I can use in my schooling and at any job I get,” Vanessa shared.

Although she had long wanted to take an Excel course, noncredit programs are often not eligible for financial aid. That changed when she saw a LinkedIn post about scholarship funding available through the Noncredit Strategies at Work (NSAW) grant. She immediately pursued the opportunity.

Vanessa chose Harper College’s Community Education program because she was already familiar with its strong reputation and trusted the leadership behind the program. The timing aligned perfectly with her goals, to strengthen her technical skills, stay competitive in the workforce, and prepare for future academic and career advancement.

What she gained exceeded expectations.

“The training I received was beyond wonderful, and the instructor was extremely knowledgeable,” she said. The four-part program provided hands-on, practical instruction that she could apply right away. As her skills grew, so did her confidence. She began sharing what she learned with coworkers and approaching Excel-based tasks with a new level of assurance.

Before the program, Excel projects felt intimidating. Today, she feels ready to take them on.

“I was not that knowledgeable about Excel, and now I feel I can tackle a project in Excel,” Vanessa explained. “This program has given me the confidence to enter the workforce with much stronger skills than before.”

Vanessa plans to continue practicing and refining her skills so she can apply them to future projects, roles, and educational pursuits. Her advice to others, especially those early in their careers, is simple: don’t wait.

“I would advise anyone who is entry-level to take this opportunity because you do not want to wait too long to learn what Microsoft Excel has to offer. The professor is amazing at explaining all of the hard material, and at the end you will be grateful that you took this opportunity.”

Vanessa’s experience highlights what’s possible through Harper College Community Education: practical, career-focused training that delivers real-world results. Whether you’re looking to sharpen a specific skill or open new professional doors, Harper’s noncredit programs can help you build the confidence and credentials to move forward.
