Course Description
Study with a filmmaker whose short films have been featured as official selections at film festivals, winning awards and honors.
In this advanced course, students will build on their filmmaking skills. Topics will vary depending on the needs of the class but will likely include directing actors, costume and set design, color grading, working for clients, increasing production value, submitting to festivals, and more.
As in the previous course, students should have access to image and audio recording equipment, and a computer, smartphone, or tablet capable of importing and editing their footage. At this stage, working with a video camera that has the option to change lenses is recommended - as is working with a tripod or gimbal. When discussing editing and color grading techniques, the instructor will demonstrate on Final Cut X and DaVinci Resolve.

Steven began his artistic career in 2009 after studying portraiture and darkroom development with Greg Halvorsen Schreck, soon specializing in staged photography and publishing two photo books. He later trained with the late Rodney Smith in New York and assisted on a film that premiered at the Brooklyn Film Festival. His portrait of John Walford was featured in Art as Spiritual Perception (2012). After earning his MFA in theater, Steven moved to New York, where he worked as an actor represented by Innovative Artists and expanded his photography career, exhibiting in Manhattan and selling to collectors. He directed music videos and commercials, consulted on scripts, and taught theater and film at Vassar and UNC-Chapel Hill. In 2018, he launched Love in NY, a web series of 100+ episodes recognized at nine international film festivals. Since 2020, he has been based in Milwaukee, teaching at Concordia University Wisconsin and Harper College.
