Course Description

The origins of country music reveal a cultural intermingling typical of immigrant-based countries. Though record companies overtly advertised music according to race in the early part of the 20th century, the roots of the music paint a different picture. In fact, there are as many African as Anglo-Celtic influences in the music. Cultural Anthropologist Scott Cashman will examine the music within the fertile cultural landscape of the American south in the 19th and early 20th centuries as you listen to both music played live and on video.  Class meets April 26th and May 3rd.
