Course Description

If you have difficulties falling asleep at bedtime, find yourself awake in the middle of the night and can’t fall back asleep, or experience restless sleep—this course is for you. iRest® Yoga Nidra is a form of guided mindfulness meditation. It is a systematic process for progressively leading the body and mind into deep relaxation. It has been widely used to help with sleep, and can be adapted to each person’s unique sleep challenges.

This class meets later in the evening to support your sleep process. We begin with gentle somatic movement and breathing that can even be done in bed. Then we will enter a deep guided iRest Yoga Nidra, designed to help you drift into deep sleep. If you go to bed later, you can join in for the beginning. Later when you are ready to sleep, you can listen to the recordings provided with each session. These practices can be used throughout the week. We will also include other ideas that you can incorporate into your sleep hygiene routine.

Course Outline

Course meets through Blackboard Collaborate Ultra: 9 - 10 pm

Each class will include:

-Ideas for establishing a restful sleep hygiene routine.

-Gentle somatic movements and breathing practices for calming and releasing stress in the body.

-A guided iRest Yoga Nidra Meditation designed specifically to induce sleep.

-Recordings of each iRest meditation as well as shorter calming practices to use during the day.

Learner Outcomes

Over the course of the 6-week class students will:

Learn experientially a variety of sleep practices to adapt to their specific needs.

Learn shorter practices to calm the nervous system throughout the day.

Come into a different relationship with their sleep and continue to support better sleep hygiene.

Understand the importance of sleep in contributing to a healthy immune system.

Have access to handouts and iRest recordings to be available on Blackboard to download on their devices.

Have the opportunity to share their specific needs and feedback of their experience.
