Course Description

Why do we travel to distant places to view art? What aesthetic qualities do these works of art possess and what can we learn from them? This course examines Giotto di Bondone, a Florentine artist and architect, who revolutionized the art of Tuscany and eventually most of the entire Western world. He developed a new style of painting by using color to express illusionistic space, thus pioneering the concept of naturalism with emphasis on the individual. This course examines the revolutionary style of Giotto, his influence on other Renaissance artists, and answers the question, “just why should we study his art anyway?”
