Course Description

New Zealand is characterized by a temperate maritime climate which reaches every vineyard in the country. Accounting for less than 1% of the world’s wine – according to New Zealand’s wine growers’ association – there is surprising variety to be had. Growers started with Sauvignon Blanc but moved on to other important whites and reds. Chardonnay, Pinot Gris, Riesling and Gewürztraminer are among the whites while Pinot Noir, Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon and Syrah are all grown to great effect. There are also smaller plantings that make the country unique. Albariño, Arneis, Grüner Veltliner, Gamay Noir, and Verdelho are all native to Europe but bring uniqueness to some of New Zealand’s most interesting wines. Marcel Flori will round out your knowledge of the wines of New Zealand. In-person students will have a selected wine tasting. Online students will receive the wine list. You may purchase the wines for tasting at home. Students must be 21 years of age or older to enroll.
