Course Description

The Phillips Collection has been a champion of American art since it opened its doors to the public in Washington D.C. in 1921. So it is not surprising to learn that more than 3/4 of its collection is American in origin. The founding of this extensive collection by Duncan Phillips in 1921 was based on his interest in acquiring works of living American artists, especially those outside the mainstream. He promoted diversity, as seen in works of self-taught artists, artists of color, foreign-born artists and naturalized Americans. This lecture will feature the works of twenty American artists and The Rothko Room.
