Course Description

The Battle of Elsenborn Ridge was the only sector of the American front lines during the early stages of the Battle of the Bulge where the Germans failed to advance. While the 101st Airborne's brave defense and Patton’s extraordinary relief of Bastogne are more celebrated, the defense of Elsenborn Ridge by the 1st, 2nd and 99th Infantry Divisions ranks as one of most spirited and remarkable feats of military strategy and tactics by the American Army in World War II. With no time to plan a cohesive defense, these three divisions met the German Panzers head-on and won. That victory achieved more success in the Battle of the Bulge than was every publicized and deserves more attention today in hindsight.
