Course Description

2019 marks the 50th anniversary of Apollo 11, when Neil Armstrong made his spectacular "Giant leap for mankind" as he stepped onto the moon. Peggy Eastwood, who had a personal role in developing Apollo equipment, reviews highlights of the 1960s race between the United States and the Soviet Union. But she also outlines a new space race that is heating up today. With the addition of SpaceX, Blue Origin, China, India, and others, scientific priorities are accompanied by geopolitical, commercial, and military considerations.
