Course Description

The 3-Wheel Basic RiderCourse (3WBRC) is designed for people who:

  • Want to learn how to operate a three-wheel motorcycle/trike (3WMC).
  • Have a physical disability or age-related issues that would make a two-wheel motorcycle too difficult to handle physically
    • 3WMC is defined as having:
      • No more than three wheels which leave three tracks in straight-line operation.
      • Handlebar steering with motorcycle type controls arranged in the standard convention.
      • Saddle seating.
      • A turning diameter of less than 40' at the widest point.

The 3WBRC provides 16 hours of classroom and on-motorcycle instruction. You must be an Illinois resident 16 years of age or older.

In the 3WBRC you will:

  • Participate in classroom and hands-on instruction.
  • Work on developing good mental strategies, managing special situations, observation and perception skills.
  • Learn the basic skills of straight-line riding, shifting (if appropriate for 3WMC used in course), turning, and stopping.
  • Work toward developing more complex street skills including essential braking, turning, and swerving techniques.
  • The 3WMCs*, helmets (if you do not have one of your own), and textbooks are provided.
    • *You may bring your own 3WMC, however:
      • It must meet the requirements listed above defining a 3WMC.
      • You are responsible for getting it to and from the training site location.
      • It must be street legal, meaning properly licensed and insured.
      • It must be in a safe operating condition able to pass a brief inspection.

You must provide:

  • a long-sleeved shirt or jacket.
  • long pants (heavy material with straight legs and no holes).
  • sturdy over-the-ankle footwear (not cloth or canvas).
  • full-fingered gloves (leather preferred).
  • eye protection (glasses, goggles, or face shield).

Upon successful completion of the 3WBRC, the Illinois Secretary of State's office will waive the written and riding tests for those who are 18 years of age or older. People who are 16 or 17 years of age must complete this course and take the written and riding tests with the Secretary of State to be eligible for a class M motorcycle endorsement.
