Piano Pleasure, Group Beginning Adults

Course Description

Students will continue mastering more advanced piano skills with emphasis on musicianship and repertoire. Pieces comparable to the level of Bach Minuets and Clementi Sonatinas will be covered. We will explore repertoire from classical and jazz genres, as well as technique and theory. Tuition does not include books, students are expected to buy their own prior to the beginning of the course. 


Course Outline

Expected Technical Skills: 
•    Major and Relative Minor Scales, 2 octaves, hands together
•    Major and Relative Minor Arpeggios, 2 octaves, hands together
•    I-IV-I-V7-I in all major and minor keys

Expected Theory Knowledge: 
•    Major and relative minor key signatures
•    Scale degrees and triads of the scale
•    Intervals of the scale
•    Chords: major, minor, augmented, diminished, V7, secondary dominants 
•    Common terms and signs
•    Common meter and rhythm
•    General music history (periods of music history and composers)
•    Form: AB, ABA, sonta-allegro, rondo

Required Materials 
•    Burgmüller-25 Progressive Pieces, Op. 100 (Alfred pub.)
•    Bach-18 Little Preludes (Kjos pub., Snell ed.)
•    Vandall-Piano Extravaganza, Solo Bk. 2 (Alfred pub.)
•    3-ring binder for assignment sheets and handouts
•    Sharpened pencil with eraser

Technology:
Students should own their own piano or keyboard at home to practice on. A limited number of practice rooms are available on the first floor of Building P.
