Learn the basics of floral design including best practices for fresh floral processing to extend the life of floral designs as well as an overview of the elements and principles of floral design. An emphasis on line, form, space, proportion, color and texture as well as proper mechanics will be applied to each fresh arrangement created with popular varieties of flowers and foliage. Basic floral pricing will be discussed as well as general information on commercial and local growers and suppliers. Students will take home completed projects including a basic round arrangement, bud vase arrangement, corsages, boutonnieres, traditional vase arrangements, and a Spring-themed garden basket. Students should plan to bring floral cutters to each class.
3 Week Session
Week 1 (4/6) – Students will enjoy an overview of:
Fresh floral processing basics.
Elements of floral design: line, form, space, texture, pattern, size/proportion, color, fragrance;
Introduce basic floral design styles (round, triangular, asymmetric, linear, oval, Ikebana, Biedermeier, pavé)
Intro to floral materials used for line, form, mass, and filler
PROJECTS: Create a basic round vase arrangement & simple two stem rose vase arrangement
Week 2 (4/13) - Intro to floral growers and resources.
Intro to bows.
PROJECT: Creating a bow –large bow for memorial / wreaths and small bow for corsage work
Intro to corsages and boutonnières
Traditional floral wiring and taping as well as use of floral adhesive
PROJECTS: Create a corsage (mount on wristlet) and coordinating bout.
No class on April 20 (Easter weekend)
Week 3 (4/27) – Intro to floral foam medium.
PROJECT: Create a Spring garden basket arrangement w/ Oasis floral foam
