Course Description

Uncial lettering is part of a group of insular scripts that were developed around the 6th to 8th centuries. It is commonly referred to as Irish script and is an alphabet that consists of only majuscules, or upper case letters. Its rounded forms are distinct from other calligraphic hands such as Italic or Blackletter and were primarily used in the writing of the Gospels. This class will begin with the basic Uncial forms and later explore its numerous variations. Participants will create a small project utilizing these letterforms and related Celtic designs.
