Course Description

Maple syrup making is not just something that happens out in the hills of New England! In this hands-on class, participants will learn to identify the several species of maple trees that grow in our local neighborhoods and learn how easy it is to tap them in late winter in order to make your own delicious maple syrup or sugar. Held at Spring Valley Nature Center in Schaumburg, participants will be able to walk out to the nature center’s ‘sugar bush’ to see how its done. We’ll discuss tree tapping supplies, simple hacks for cooking down your sap into syrup at home, and taste some fresh and local maple syrup. All participants will leave with know-how and a starter tapping kit to get started. Directions to the meeting location will be sent after registration.
