Course Description

You will be introduced to California wines, with a focus on the grape varieties present. You will start your journey with a history of wine production in California. You will then move into an examination of the geography and varieties of California wines including, Napa Valley, Sonoma County, Mendocino, Paso Robles, Santa Barbara and Monterey.

Meeting 1:
History of California wine
Geography and climate of California wine regions
Soils and viticulture

•    Napa Valley: Cabernet Sauvignon, Chardonnay, and Merlot
•    Sonoma County: Pinot Noir, Chardonnay, and Zinfandel
•    Mendocino: Pinot Noir, Chardonnay, and Zinfandel

Meeting 2:
•    Paso Robles: Zinfandel, Cabernet Sauvignon, and Rhône-style blends
•    Santa Barbara: Pinot Noir, Chardonnay, and Syrah
•    Monterey: Chardonnay, Pinot Noir, and Riesling

Learner Outcomes

You will gain an understanding of the unique terroir and key grape varieties of California wine regions. By the end of the course, you will be able to describe the grape variety profiles of some of the most popular California wines, such as Zinfandel, Merlot, and Syrah while having a basic understanding of the expression in wine of different varietals of grape.
