Pottery

Course Description


In this course, beginners will learn several hand-building techniques, basic clay terms and techniques, and basic wheel throwing. You’ll learn these skills through weekly demonstrations and interaction with the instructor. Advanced students are encouraged to pursue their interests and projects or develop and polish their pieces. Both beginners and experienced students will benefit from the instructor’s assistance and interaction with other students.


 

Course Outline

Week 1
Introductions, Studio Orientation and Tour, Clean up procedures
Class outline
Demonstration—Pinch pots
Project—5 to 10 pinch pots


Week 2
Review pinch pots from last class, answer questions regarding pinch method
Demonstration—Coils (hand-rolled and extruded)
Project—Coil pot

Week 3
Questions and discussion on coil method
Demonstration—Slab rollers and soft Slab Construction
Project—soft slab vessel, cup, bowl or plate


Week 4—IMPORTANT DISCUSSIONS ON GLAZING
Questions and discussion on slab method
Glazing and firing process introduced
Demonstration—Glaze techniques on Do’s (Dipping, Pouring, Spraying,
Brushings, Stains, etc.) and Don’ts (over glazing, cleaning, runny glazes, etc)

Week 5
Questions and discussion on glazing
Introduction on wheel throwing and clean up
Demonstration—Wheel throwing a cylinder
Project—Throwing and centering on the wheel.


Week 6
Questions and discussion on throwing cylinders
Demonstration on throwing, ribbing a bowl form and trimming on the wheel
Project—Throw cups or bowls and trim work from the previous week

Week 7
Last day to work with wet clay if you are not taking the next class.
Hand build or wheel throwing


Week 8
Trim or/and glaze pieces
Finish projects
Clean up areas
Questions and discussion on any of the techniques 
Last day for this session
